The Plant of Immortality

5 Beauty Benefits of Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a cactus plant that belongs to the Liliaceae family. It grows in dry climates such as those found in parts of Africa and India and has been used medicinally for centuries. Known to the Egyptians as the plant of immortality, aloe vera comes with a wide array of amazing healing properties, some of which you may already know about. Aloe leaves secrete a clear gel that when broken off from the rest of the plant that can be applied topically to heal wounds and soothe skin. Today I'm going to share with you five of my favorite beauty benefits of this super plant.

1. It's a natural moisturizer.

Aloe moisturizes the skin without giving it a greasy feel, so it`s perfect for anyone with an oily skin complexion. Research has shown that Aloe Vera extract is an effective natural substance for improving skin hydration – making it a useful ingredient in cosmetic formulations and as a treatment for dry skin.

2. It helps treat acne & acne scars.

The antibacterial properties of Aloe Vera are very effective in treating acne and reducing the redness caused by it. It prevents bacteria from infecting acne wounds and accelerates the process of healing. In addition to treating acne, aloe vera gel also helps to reduce acne scars by promoting skin regeneration.

3. It helps fight the signs of aging.

As it is rich in vitamins C and E and beta carotene (a pre-cursor to vitamin A), Aloe may have some anti-aging qualities. It's anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, and its ability to lighten blemishes, also help it take years off your face. Aloe Vera can also be taken in supplement form to fight aging, research has shown that it increases the body’s production of collagen and improves skin elasticity in just 90 days.

4. It helps promote hair growth.

Aloe Vera may help activate new hair growth by increasing the blood circulation to the scalp, and delivering several important vitamins and minerals. According to Diane Gage, author of Aloe Vera: Nature’s Soothing Healer, keratin which is the main protein in hair has a chemical makeup similar to that of Aloe Vera, which means this healing gel rejuvenates hair while giving it more elasticity.

5. It's a great natural conditioner.

According to Chaz Dean, WEN Hair + Body Care founder, aloe contains proteolytic enzymes which help repair dead skin cells on the scalp."It acts as a great conditioner and leaves your hair smooth and shiny," he explains. "It also helps promote healthy hair growth, prevent itching on the scalp, reduce dandruff, and condition your hair."
